As of 1970, there has been a dramatic gender shift in American Dentistry thanks to Lucy Hobbs Taylor. She was an influential person in modern day dentistry because she was the first American woman to advance into becoming a dentist in a world where only men dentists were accepted. Since her death, an organization called the American Association Of Women Dentists was formed in order to serve women dentists and to facilitate a means of success for them. The Aegis Dental networks stated that AAWD’s idea was to bring women together under the teachings of leadership, educational opportunities, creating networks, and providing scholarships and loans to student members. Some women, especially if they are single parents are more likely to take on two jobs resulting in them having to go for a part time dentistry job. As a result of them leaving their jobs to care for their children and other relatives, some knowledge and experience will slip the minds of the dentists. Opportunities were presented to the dentists that took maternity leave or left for other reason in order for them to be in touch with their skills and careers. Such opportunities were like Keeping In Touch Schemes and Getting Back To Practice. These programs were meant to keep dentists in touch with their careers after they took a break as to minimize the amount of catch up work they had to do. The British Dental Journal states that these programs consist of “reading professional journals, postgraduate meetings, hands-on course, computer assisted learning and distance learning packages (BDJ).” To further improve the access throughout the country, KITS eligibility was extended to dentists that took a break less than a year. In the field of Dentistry, the annual income of a dentist is approximately 172 thousand dollars with full experience. A research done by Dentistry IQ states that in average, when comparing full-time men and women dentists and or practitioners who were out of dental school for ten years or less, the online article states,“ women earned 64% of what men earned”. The article goes on to say the income gap did not get closer between the genders, even if they both had the same education. Although women aspire to achieve great academic achievements, they still have the biological and the need to bear children. Having children is a beautiful gift, however, it can sometimes ruin careers because women do not have female mentorship when it comes to maternity leave. Since women already earn less than men, this makes the situation of new mothers worse as they cannot afford to juggle between motherhood and bring a Dentist. Also, in general, women are forced whether direct or indirect, to make more personal vs. professional life compromises as they can get too emotional if things get out of hand. If these two hemispheres of life collide, it can be a handful of work to clean up. As a result, more women decide to quit and or take long job breaks in order to get things together.
