The way we communicate with children and adults will be similar or the same depending on the situation at hand. Maintaining eye contact and other non verbal communication like positive body language shows attentiveness and interest. You must never assume how much someone knows or understands as this could damage a relationship going forward. Actively listening to both adults and children is very important as this conveys interest and respect but also helps to get the most out of the conversation benefiting both you and the person you are talking to.
There are some types of communication that are aimed more at adults then children and should be communicated in a professional capacity. Writing emails and letters should be wrote with a level of understanding on the information you are trying to get across but also taking into consideration the recipients role. If writing a letter to a parent requesting their attendance at school or advising on new events taking place at school would require a less detailed specification then when communicating with a professional. You also need to take into consideration any communication barriers there may be and adapt your communication to suit. You should adapt the level of communication to suit the level of what the child understands. A simple nod or shake of the head maybe OK for a young child, but a young person may require more in depth feedback to allow them to better their techniques.
