In the past, the majority of marijuana was sold illegally, therefore it was not taxed. With marijuana being taxed now, it can help raise tax revenue in different ways. According to an article on cityofdhs.org, it states “Every medical marijuana collective, cooperative, dispensary, operator, establishment, provider or other type of entity legally cultivating medical marijuana in the City of Desert Hot Springs, in accordance with permits issued pursuant to Ordinance No. 552 and Ordinance No. 553, shall pay to the City for the space utilized in connection with the cultivation of marijuana for medical use an annual tax of $25 per square foot for the first 3,000 square feet, and then $10 per square foot for the remaining space utilized in connection with the cultivation of marijuana for medical use.” This will help bring in hundreds and thousands of dollars towards law enforcement funding and infrastructure within the city. And as of now, there are more than 40 cannabis facilities planned, approved or under construction in Desert Hot Springs.” The Coachella valley is using too much water too quickly. Bringing a business with marijuana plants that will require gallons of water is a complete waste and will do no good for the city and its citizens living there. Water is unsustainable and has been for a long time. In the final analysis, the marijuana industry can have its pros and cons when it comes to growing cannabis in the city of Desert Hot Springs.
