Reason: Basically, this is a project that looks to make the “D” logo found on the east side of the dorms a permanent, fixed structure. Currently, the “D” is made of large rocks painted white that although they serve the purpose, can be and have been moved around multiple times throughout the school year. When the “D” is damaged or moved, it has oftentimes fallen on the Student Senate to march out on the hill and take the time to find all the pieces and re-shape the “D.” This adds a great deal of unnecessary work to maintaining what could be a prominent feature for Dawson Community College.
Basic Idea: Essentially, in order to make the “D” permanent, we could simply build a new “D” logo using cinder blocks filled with concrete, anchored to the hill using rebar or some other such material, and paint on the “D.” However, I propose we go even further. I would like to look at including some landscaping around the “D” that would add to the flair and elegance of the logo. I would like to add in a two-layered, terraced, retaining wall structure around the “D” that would blend into the side of the hill. The top terrace would provide the base for the “D” structure, while the lower terrace could used as a rock garden and filled with various drought resistant plants (yucca, cedar, etc). The two-layered look would provide an elegant backdrop for the “D,” and help it to stand out even more against the hillside. The use of rock and plants
