Once a thriving city Detroit has slowly declined in employment rates and population, this has left miles of abandoned homes and a high crime rate in the city. It is a fundamental right for children to receive a proper education no matter their, race, gender, social status, etc. In Detroit, there are many children who are being left out and are not receiving a proper education. Detroit is becoming an education desert. Since 2000, the city has continuously suffered economically, many parents have opted to leave the district or to enroll in a public charter school. According to Lake, Jochim and DeArmond (2015) the city has one of the lowest performing school districts in the nation. In 1994 Michigan voters passed Proposal A in response to high property taxes, this shifted the way that the state financed education – schools were allotted money per student. Because Detroit has suffered a population decline since the 1950s, this proposal greatly affected the city’s public schools (Schneider 2016). While surrounding cities like Bloomfield Hills have acquired greater populations and better reputations, Detroit and its children have been seemingly forgotten. The city’s public education system has been greatly unsupported by city leaders. If Detroit is going to move forward the city will need parents that are motivated and advocates or civic leaders whom plan to invest their time and resources into generating a creative plan of action that can help solve problems in the school system. This plan could include community engagement initiatives that aim to increase parent involvement.
