Rosa has rode the Montgomery buses many times, but one bus ride, changed her life forever. On December 1, 1955, Rosa boarded the bus, and sat in the colored section as usual, after a long day of standing on her feet. The white section filled, which made the driver move the sign further back. This sign, made the difference from where white were able to sit, and where blacks were able to sit. The moving of the sign allowed more white passengers in the seating area and black passengers standing in the back. Moments later, a white male boarded the bus and asked Rosa to move. She refused, shocking everyone on board at the time. The bus driver, then asked for Rosa to move her seat and allow the white passenger to be seated. She refused again, which made the bus driver call police. The bus driver claimed to have a very disruptive African American woman, riding his bus that night. Rosa was not afraid, she knew that what she was doing was right. She was taken into custody at the Montgomery Police Department and fined fourteen dollars, for violating segregation
