On February 4th, 1913, Rosa Louise McCauley was born in Tuskegee, Alabama to James McCauley and Leona Edwards. Her father was employed as a carpenter and her mother as a teacher. In Rosa’s early years, she was ill most of her childhood, so she was a very small child. Her parents divorced at some point and her mother moved Rosa and her brother to Pine Level, a town close to Montgomery, Alabama. Rosa spent the rest of her childhood living with her grandmother and grandfather.

As a child, Rosa was first taught by her mother, Leona Edwards. Later on, Rosa would start going to an industrial school meant for young girls. When she hit the legal age to apply for college, she applied and was accepted into Alabama state college meant for black Americans.
