Diabetes is the leading cause for kids adults aged 20-74 years old. Insulin Pump is a small device that delivers insulin for adults and children with diabetes. Insulin is a hormone that enables certain cells in an organism to take up glucose from the blood. The main reason people use an insulin pump is because your body is unable to make enough insulin a day and therefore by injecting yourself with insulin a day, you stay healthy and flexible. Insulin flows from the pump through a small plastic tube into your body automatically which would be inserted under your skin. It can be placed on a belt or kept in your pocket. There are many colours and it’s easy to hide. Using an insulin pump is very simple. First you clean the area of which you will be inserting the insulin pump needle in. The needle can be inserted anywhere into your body but normally it will be inserted near the abdomen. Once the insulin pump is connected to the tube, it watches all the steps you take. A few disadvantages of using a insulin pump is that it is very expensive, the most you can disconnect your pump is for an hour (For when you want to take a shower), they do not think for you which means you have to check your blood glucose at least 4 times a day which can often be a lot of work, it can also cause weight gain and the risk of skin infections or absorption problems. Letting others know that you have diabetes is also something that most people will not prefer.
