It just depends on how much I enjoyed those 4 years. Many ex-marines have told me I wont enjoy my first 4 years but I might. My plan as of right now is to just go in for four years and come out of the military and go on about life.
The motors and technology that I will work on in the marines will be some of the most complicated things ill ever work on. Ill also have the experience that most other people wont get. And with the experience that ill have it will help me get a better job. Also with being in the military employers wont have to worry to much about me being unruly at work and having a problem with there rules.
After the military I plan on going to a state that is either warm all year round, or cold all year round. I hate this ohio weather. Id prefer for it to be warm all year. And because of the size of the motors ill be working on safety cautiousness is a must. Everything being worked on is hg and checks and rechecks before moving are critical tools are much bigger and the requirements for torqueing are enormous specialty tools are a must. The most challenging part about the jobs would be trouble shooting the engines. You must know how the engine operates and trying to find a small problem is very challenging. In a typical work week as a locomotive mechanic consist of 40 to 50 hrs and in the military its 40 to 60 hours because of the missions you may have to go on can take time. There aren’t many opportunities for self-employment. Other than a small business having a contract with the rail a yard witch doesn’t happen much. The typicall salary of a locomotive mechanic is very good. The long term potential of this career is very very good. Typically the advancement potential is pretty good usually goes from apprintance, to journey man, to lead mechanic. How my interviewee got his job was he went threw the military and then went to a rail yard witch is what I plan on doing. Most people enter this profession threw the apprentice with a rail line. If I keep going in the path that im going in ill be able to easily get where I want.
