Compare the backgrounds of Jefferson and Paine; did Paine have an advantage or disadvantage by not being born in the colonies? Explain.
I believe Paine had the disadvantage not being born in the colonies. Even though Paine's had pamphlet was written a few months prior his "Common Sense" pamphlet may have spoken volumes to the readers being an outsiders point of view looking in. I also think that Paine was speaking in a more broad sense rather than that of a colonist living under a ruler across the big pond. With Jefferson being born in the colonies his words, to me, were spoken from living first hand of what the colonies were living through.
Examine the language used in both documents; who is the audience for each writer?
While reading both I feel that both were directed to the people of the colonies. Both talk of freedom and equal rights but it seemed Paine's was directed towards free …show more content…
Jefferson does not discuss slavery in the Declaration because he was a slave owner himself as much as the rest of the free men in the colonies. Also during the time period it being so common and in ways "free labor" the economic repercussions would have broken this new country from the start.
What do Paine and Jefferson say about the monarchy in their respective documents?
Basically what I read from the two documents is that the monarchy was using the colony as pawns to make the crown great. Being able to impose laws, taxes and whatever they felt necessary to get more money from the colonies believing it to be untouched wealth. All while having control of the population with the amount of immigration of bodies to be a contributing factor to society. While being born into the colonies it was about an 18 year return before the child was at age where they could be useful politically and economically.
