The government keeps us under its Rules/Laws and forces us to follow them and if not there are harsh punishments. This is because the government is a man made thing which rules over us all and forces us to do what it wants. Man made things also are Despair, Depression and Guilt these every day things bring discomfort to us all in one point of our lives. Melinda Sordino, the narrator in Speak by Anderson, is a character who clearly is affected by her surroundings. Her surroundings either affect her negatively or positively. These feelings cause her to decide whether or not her surroundings are a hostile environment or a haven. Places that are Hostile include the Auditorium, Lunch room, and Hallways. Melinda`s reaction to whether or not her surroundings are a haven or hostile is directly linked to her internal emotions. One of the Hostile environments for Melinda is the Auditorium. Melinda is affected negatively because she is made fun of . She was also told by her Ex-Bff (Rachel) "I hate you" ("P.5"). Whiting this setting she feels hurt/Injured not physically but mentally. Melinda acts in this environment by thinking to herself "I need to sit down" ("P.5"). This represents to her how, what happened over the summer affects her. Another Hostile environment for Melinda is Gym class. Melinda is affected negatively because of her Insecurity and because Nicole won't speak to her. Melinda calls Gym class "illegal, because it is so humiliating" ("P.18"), since she has to change(in a bathroom stall). Melinda feels unhappy because she isn`t athletic like Nicole and Insecure about changing. "Nichole can do anything that involves a ball and a whistle" ("P.19"), This represents her old clan with her friends. Melinda does not act very different in this class then a regular person would and does not do anything differently. Also another
