“Tereotypes lose their power when the world is found to be more complex than the stereotype would suggest. When we learn that individuals do not fit the group stereotype it begins to fall apart” (ED Koch). The media began in the late 1400’s and has been rapidly growing ever since then. People are easily influenced by what they hear or see even if what that might be is not fully true. The media has one of the greatest influences over people, especially in the most recent decades. Although almost overly influential, the media has a vary important role in people’s everyday lives as it is one of the easiest ways to inform a mass population. However the medias influence over people has created an allusion in relationship to those who have disabilities in saying “they’re all the same” (Common Portrayals of Persons with Disabilities) and has continued to add to the discrimination of those who are disabled. …show more content…
In the book and later movie “A Christmas Carole” by Charles Dickens, Tiny Tim, who plays a little boy with a disability in this piece is strictly defined by the fact that he has a disability and cannon survive without help form medical intervention. This type of media stereotypes all disabled people into the same category, the audience is left with the impression that if one is mentally and or physically impaired then he or she is unable to live any sort or a “normal”
