The central research question is concerned with a study of the implications in which police officers lead with discretion. The research has been designed to probe the perceptions and experiences of police officers across the whole rank structure in order to obtain data to explore the research topic.

The strength in choosing to use qualitative research is its ability to be flexible and provide in-depth descriptions of how people have experienced the issue under research. It provides information about how people respond within an issue, that is, the often-contradictory behaviours, beliefs, opinions, emotions and relationships of individuals. Members of the group were all responsible for the delivery of front line operational policing in both uniform and detective capacity.
