In this paper, I will discuss my thoughts regarding applying the supervisory roles utilizing the discrimination model. I will also describe a skill relevant to each supervisor role in the discrimination model. Lastly, I will explain the supervisor’s role and skill set as explained in the discrimination model of supervision.
The Discrimination Model
The discrimination model is an integrative model of supervision “which attends to three separate areas of focus in supervision and assumes three supervisor roles” (Young & Basham, 2014, p.437). The role of the teacher the supervisor teaches techniques and concept to the supervisee (Young & Basham, 2014). According to Pearson (2004), the supervisor provides answers and trains the supervisee in applying interventions and learning new techniques. In the case of Michael, I would suggest that he refer back to his theoretical orientation and look for techniques that would assist in working with his client. If Michael were a reality therapist, I would suggest that he ask the client what does she want and assist her in choosing other behaviors to get her closer to her desired result (Corey, 2013). As the counselor, the supervisor helps the supervisee focus on personal issues that may interfere with the counseling sessions (Young & Basham, 2014). I would suggest that Michael uses self affirmation to build his confidence. The supervisor assists the supervisee with personal growth to facilitate professional effectiveness working with clients (Pearson, 2004). In the role of consultant, the supervisor consults the supervisee with case conceptualization and treatment planning (Pearson, 2004). In the case of Michael, I would help him plan his next session and how to make the client aware she may be having feels of transference for a father figure to Michael (Laureate Education,
