What is discrimination? How is discrimination different from prejudice and stereotyping?
Discrimination is basically treating someone different based on their color, race or sex. Discrimination is closely related to prejudice and stereotyping. Discrimination may happen based on what people have heard or seen on television about different races or groups. Discrimination would be someone walking into a place of business and being treated poorly because of their gender or race. If a woman walks into a job and the company is a labor type of job field they tend to discriminate against women feeling that they are not strong enough to handle the job, when in fact there are some women who can handle whatever is thrown at them just as good as a man will, this is a form of discrimination. Another form of discrimination would be getting poor customer service at a place of business based on your skin color. I have witnessed this myself many times and thought that we were past this point in the world we live in today. Its sad to say but discrimination still goes on today.
What are the causes of discrimination?
Some causes of discrimination is when people experience one thing with a certain gender or race, or have heard from a friend or tv about how a race or gender acts in certain situations they tend to act defensive or discriminate against someone. Therefore when they come into contact with that certain group they feel like that person is going to do the same thing they have heard or experienced. When in fact this is not true because every person is not or does not act the same. Some types of discrimination are passed on by a child seeing their parents or adult figure acting that way towards someone at a young age, and they tend to keep these practices once they get older.
