During the civil war most doctors only received two years of medical training, making them highly incapable and unqualified to help people. America’s medicine was severely behind Europe’s, America did not even own a single stethoscope or microscope until after the war. Most Civil War doctors have never performed surgery or treated a gunshot wounds. They didn’t know about infection, so they did not clean or use sterile instruments. As a result many died from typhoid and dysentery.
