One main reason young adults are becoming obese is due to not having a family who is always home. This is called a latchkey kid; a child who is at home without adult supervision for some part of the day, especially after school until a parent returns from work. In today's society this is becoming more and more common, due to the fact that most households, both adults carry a job to support the family. Since the young adult is at home alone most of the time, they tend to eat junk food, practically anything found in the house. This is because there is not someone who is able to cook a homemade meal everyday or when the young adult gets home from school. These food are most likely to be frozen or processed foods. This main point relates to the social problem which is obesity because obesity is caused by many factors and not having a stable home is one of the main reasons. Food companies use television advertising and other forms of propaganda to persuade young adults into purchasing their food. However, healthy foods should be the ones being advertised rather than the unhealthy foods. Research has found strong associations between increases in advertising for non-nutritious foods and rates of young adults obesity. Young adults have a remarkable ability to remember the content from the ads so companies attack the young because they are bound to buy the certain food that is being advertised.
