Waking up to the sun shining bright in my face, I knew that it was going to be a perfect beach day. I didn't even try to get out of bed that day, I called all my friends and in almost minutes our decision was made, we were going to the beach. I had sprung out of bed and ran downstairs to tell my mom that I will be commandeering her car for the day. I ate breakfast swiftly while my mom was telling me to be careful since I had just received my license, but because I had driven as a kid so much, I had no worries.
So as I left I kissed my mom goodbye, and since it was all my neighborhood friends I did not have to pick anyone up because they were all outside my house. We all piled in the car and I drove perfectly to moonlight beach. It was definitely a huge rush, knowing that I wasn't allowed to be driving anybody until I had my license for 6months, and I had a full car load of my friends. We were obviously listening to music pretty loud, and all the windows of the car were down. We arrived at the beach and had our fun for a couple of hours. We then decide it was probably a good time to go home since we were all hungry.
We left the beach and went through the neighborhoods surrounding the beach. The roads were very terrible along with the other drivers and pedestrians who did not make it easy for a first time driver. But I had got through it and we decided to eat at “Rauls Mexican Food”. When we were all done, I decided it was time to go back home, so we all got back into my car and began our journey back home. It felt like I was rejoining a battle, a battle against every other car around be that could be potentially an accident.
On our way home I decided to go the “long” way home since I wanted to drive just a little bit longer before giving the car back to my mom. So we decided to go through this long windy neighborhood. As we turned onto the quiet street, the wind gushing through the windows, music blasting at its full potential, I think of how much fun we are having and how awesome of an experience it is to be driving. I moved the steering wheel to the left, the only available way I can go I hear someone shout “DRIFT IT! DRIFT IT!”. When I came up to the next left turn I decided I was up for the challenge, thinking I’m the best driver in the world. With my speed gaining and as I reached the point of no return I threw the steering wheel left, while simultaneously ripping the emergency brake up and we slid. At that moment I heard silence, no wind, no music, no screams, just silence. A black Honda was coming from the opposite direction, and my heart skipped a beat. As I came back into reality only to hear the music again blaring, the wind still surging through all windows, and the screams of my four friends that were scared for their lives, I reacted. I gripped the wheel, and used all of my force to throw it in the opposite direction, while at the same time disengaging the emergency brake. It was a success, we did not collide and the black Honda took the turn as if the driver didn’t even notice what could have happened.
I was in awe that we did not collide with the Honda for a split second, when I realized that the cars momentum was still in motion and we still
