The case persisted through several courts and ultimately reached the U.S. Supreme Court. So why would this be a major event that caused the Civil War? The Dred Scott case is such a key event to the Civil War because the Northerners were so outraged by this case, but the Southerners were so happy. The Northerners were outraged because they thought owning sales was wrong and it wasn’t right to be in a free state and let go and then trapped again.
