Dyspraxia is a form of developmental coordination disorder (DCD). It is a common disorder affecting fine and/or gross motor coordination in children and adults. DCD is lifelong disorder. It is also distinct from other motor disorders such as, cerebral palsy and strokes, and occurs across a range of intellectual abilities.
The effects of dyspraxia include, no participation and functioning of everyday life skills in education and work. These types of children have difficulties with self-care, writing, typing, riding a bike or scooter. They also have problems with social skills. They can behave immaturely even though they typically have average or above-average intelligence. There are different kinds of dyspraxia like: Ideomotor dyspraxia: Makes it have to complete step-by-step motor tasks such as combing hair and waving goodbye. Ideational dyspraxia: Makes it more difficult to perform a sequence of movements like brushing teeth or making a bed. Oromotor dyspraxia, also called verbal apraxia or apraxia of speech makes it difficult to coordinate muscle movements needed to pronounce words. These signs can lead to having dyspraxia in the child’s life as early as a toddler and can be as late as high school. They can be a very lonely person or a very social person as they get older going into college and adult life. Dyspraxia can be identified very quickly if signs are found very quickly.
