There have been lots of new changes in our school in just a small amount of time. Some of those changes include the use of e-hall-pass, closing the majority of the bathrooms for boys and girls, and also the new idea of banning phone usage next year. These solutions for the many problems we have within our student body are good ideas, but they may not be helping as much as they could be, and there may be better solutions for these issues. The E-hall-pass is one of the first big changes I’ve experienced since transferring to high school. The idea of it is great and I think it can be a great tool used in our school. Some of the problems that I, myself, and my peers around me have encountered is how inconvenient it can be to just …show more content…
Not only can it be difficult to reach sometimes, but also some of the limits and restrictions can be very frustrating, such as the time limit of 7 minutes before getting flagged, the limit of passes, and the pass capacity for the 3 bathrooms that are open. I understand what these restrictions were meant to fix, but they may be major inconveniences for good students just trying to get through the day. Another restriction that was newly set is locking off 6 out of our 10 bathrooms. I understand the concerns and reasoning behind this, but I think that is not targeting the actual issues and is punishing students who just want to do their business in a private and safe space. I have heard from numerous students, boys and girls, complaints about how crowded the bathrooms are, the groups of students vaping, and having to walk halfway across the school just to use the restroom. I know that limiting the bathrooms seems like it would limit the amount of issues, but with my experience as well as my peers have noticed that it may have increased. Since now it's not just a couple students messing around in bathrooms, now it is anywhere from 15-30 students crowded in one area either trying to use the restroom or vaping and …show more content…
The tardy policy is also a growing issue that is affecting our society. I know that tardies are a big problem in our school and that to try and minimize them, the consequences have been updated. From what I remember from last year if you came to school more than 3 times (without having someone call) within the first 10 minutes of school you would receive a detention, and from what I’ve heard from my peers and other adults in the building is that now if you come in even one time late no matter what time within the school day, if a parent doesn’t call they receive a detention. This policy does not accommodate the students with parents that are not capable of calling no matter what the reason is. Why should a student be punished with an hour of detention minimum for being 2 minutes late to school? Lastly, a new phone policy for next year has already been causing concerns from students and parents. I do agree upon the fact that phones can be a distraction to some students, but those students have the ability to make those choices themselves. Some observers may see a class of students on their phones and think the phones are the problem and that the
