Health education competencies When reviewing the NCHEC Roles and Responsibilities, the Area of Responsibility VIII: Ethics and Professionalism caught attention because it is crucial for healthcare professionals to be educated on ethical standards in order to protect patients rights and self-advocacy. In today's healthcare world, ethics have become a hot topic in regards to what is considered right and wrong depending on a patient's individual requests, beliefs, and overall quality of life. In a healthcare setting, practicing professionalism is crucial for protecting each patient's safety. All health issues need to be taken very seriously and in a professional manner in order to build a trusting patient-provider relationship. Talking to patients and family members in a professional manner also allows patients to feel like they are heard.
