“Privacy and security on the Internet” is the phrase that was searched utilizing Google Search Engine and EBSCOhost’s Academic Search Premier Database. While both methods returned results, the results differed dramatically in the type of results. Both search engines are examined with a focus on accuracy, authority, objectivity, and currency.
Google
The phrase “privacy and security on the internet” was searched utilizing the Google Search Engine. Google is the industry leader in web searches to the point that the word has become a verb (“I googled…) meaning searched.
The Google results included many sites that are attempting to sell products that are related to the topic at hand. From an objectivity standpoint, these sites obviously demonstrated bias as they were attempting to hype up the fear to sell a product.

Many of the sites were gave no author. This isn’t to say that there were not sights that had authority. The problem was weeding through the results to find the sites that had authority and were from reputable sources.
EBSCOhost
The EBSCOhost Search Primer differed in its initial search approach as it allows the user to define what content is to be searched. While this can be done to a certain extent with Google, it is the default way of searching with EBSCOhost. After searching “privacy and security on the internet” within the EBSCOhost site, the following observations were identified.
EBSCOhost identifies in the results in a very easy to read format what type of publication that the results originated from. This includes defined types such as Academic Journals and Periodicals. This allows the user to quickly identify the accuracy of the results.
The authority of the results are front and center as the author of the information is provided in the search results along with his or her credentials when available. An example of this is the following
