Poe’s mother became very sick shortly after his father left and she died of tuberculosis. Now left an orphan, Poe had no where to go. The Allen family welcomed him into their family but never truly adopted him. As he grew up he became very close with Mrs. Allen. She would die later in Poe’s life of tuberculosis. At the age of eighteen Poe joined the military. While in the army Poe began to write novels and poems. Six months later Poe got kicked out of the army due to disobedience. Some say that he purposely acted out to leave the military. Poe attended the University of Virginia for college, but he would not finish school due to financial issues. Poe returned home after being in the military and started working for a magazine company. While being home Poe fell in love with his thirteen year old cousin Virginia. They would end up getting married on September 22nd, 1835. Poe followed in his fathers footsteps and and was an alcoholic. This bad habit would end up costing him his job at the magazine company. This narrative poem is known for its drama. “The Raven is full of symbolism and imagery. Poe uses every character and sometime objects to represent something completely different. For example the raven in the story was used to represent death and how it is always lingering and waiting. The narrator in the story in grieving and is constantly reminded by this bird of his loss. Poe’s ability to create a scene for the reader is amazing. In this poem he manages to create a spooky mood through the use of descriptive and realistic words. He also uses repeated words throughout this poem that causes the reader to remember them even after the poem is finished. An example of this is the use of the word nevermore. The raven can only say one word to the narrator speaking to him before he flies off into the night and the word is always nevermore. This poem once released by Poe was published in two different places at one time, showing how loved it was by everyone. It even made an appearance into Europe.
