Page 164 is when the scion is first mentioned, Luis explains to Paul’s group “At this spot, we cut a slit into the rough lemon tree, set a new type of bud inside, and close the slit up with tape. Now we have turned the tree into something else… The new bud that we grafted onto the rootstock is called a scion. The word scion means, like, a child or a descendant of the tree.” This quote is critical to the theme since it represents Paul coming from Houston, Texas to Tangerine County, Florida where he grows both physically and mentally. This quote can also mean that Paul coming from Lake Windsor Middle to Tangerine Middle, so that the old Paul which is now rooted into Tangerine will grow into a new Paul.
