Effective Study Habits Worksheet
Review Phoenix Career Plan results of Career Plan Building Activity: Work Culture Preference, respond to the following in 50 to 100 words each:
1. Describe your ideal study environment.
My study environment is the kitchen table. Bill knows while I have my school stuff out table is off limits. He is not allowed to touch or move anything. I can usually study while the baby is in and out of the room. The times I really need to concentrate, I wait until she is asleep. I will work on something else until then. I know it is not the textbook study environment, but it works for me. Ideally, I want to have a 3rd bedroom I can use for school/office.
2. List some of the distractions that might hinder your study progress or your performance in an online classroom.
Distractions for an online classroom come in various ways. Cell phone, TV, myself, other people needing you or coming to you for advice with a personal problem, not that I have this problem yet, but nice weather, researching the Internet, social media, daydreaming, procrastination, not realizing how committed one needs to be for an online classroom, poor time management, online games, getting frustrated. The list of distractions just goes on. Everywhere you look there could be a distraction.
3. What actions can you take to manage and eliminate distractions?
Some ways you can eliminate or manage distractions are letting others know you will not be available until after your set school time, turning off cell phone, explain to family and friends how important this is to you and let them know unless it is life or death a problem can wait until you are done. Make your status something about study time, and ask family and friends to hold you accountable if you are back on Facebook before set time, if you are getting frustrated take a mini-break regain your composure. When I was 5 my parents thought I was going deaf, they had my hearing checked and it turned out that my hearing was just fine, I am just really good at blocking out things I don’t want to hear, so TV’s, music, baby playing or crying do not distract me. My biggest distraction is myself, forgetting I was going to start a load of laundry, or I needed to call someone in my family before I started studying. Writing little notes on my desktop has worked out perfectly.
4. How will you apply your personal learning style? How does your personal Learning style affect your study habits?
I was not surprised to see the results from VARK. I always have been able to use all 4 to suit my immediate need. In my personal finance class I can use kinesthetic. Example, learning how to do a personal financial statement, I read, took notes, and did worksheets. Then applied what I learned to my personal life, by making a financial plan, statement, budget and so forth for my household. The act of doing makes a big difference. For this class, you make me have really dig deeper into a topic, even a simple topic. Rereading, writing or mostly rewriting my thoughts and I have found I talk to myself about a topic, trying to figure out just how everything fits into the big picture.
5. List 5 effective study strategies from this week that you will use. Explain why you selected them and why they are effective strategies for online learning.
Five effective study strategies I will be putting into place are, previewing material, active reading, taking good notes, talk through cards, and self-testing. I picked these 5 because of my learning style; with this combination I will apply all learning styles kinesthetic, aural, read/write, and visual. Thus, allowing me to work on the weaker areas of my learning styles, and following Kolb suggestion concrete experience abilities.
