As cited in Hart (2010), the foundation of patient centered care is to respect and understand every patient’s preferences, values and expressed needs. The application of effective therapeutic communication skills of nurses will then come into the picture. Therapeutic communication skills application by nurses has been studied for quite some years now. Just like for instance, there has been a research dated way back 1975 about pain relief and increased recovery rates of patients that were given proper information about their condition.

As a nurse, the need for effective therapeutic patient communication is very much needed. In order to provide ethical and quality care, being aware and responding appropriately to patients’ cultural values, beliefs, language and health literacy level should be done. Focusing on the patient’s culture, values, language and health literacy level, a nurse can deliver ethical and quality nursing care through patient centered communication and care, thus leading to improved community relations and enhanced morale.
