Eleanor Roosevelt is one of the most iconic First Ladies in history. She was born on October 11, 1884, in the city of the “Big Apple,” New York. Mrs. Roosevelt had three younger brothers, two of whom were fully related, and one step-brother. Both of her parents died while Eleanor Roosevelt was young, before the age of ten, to be exact. After the death of her parents, she was sent to live with her grandmother, Mrs.Valentine (IN TEXT CITATION). Roosevelt met her 5th cousin, future President Franklin D. Roosevelt and by the age of 20, they were married. A year after they were married “they became parents of six children” (National Park Service 1). Having children did not affect her much, because research shows that the kids were mostly raised by her mother-in-law. Continuing as the United States entered World War 2 she “served as Assistant Director of Civilian Defense from 1941-1942” (Nat’l Park Service 2). During her time as the Assistant Director, Eleanor Roosevelt showed that she could foster good relationships with America's Allies which boosted the morale of United States active military people, causing a more positive worldview from the soldiers. While Mr. Roosevelt was President of the United States of America, she was crucial in developing more opportunities for women. Mrs. Roosevelt joined many different women's organizations to help women run for office, and “address the causes of poverty and war” (Role in Women’s 2). Eleanor Roosevelt's efforts showed her wish for women to be treated more equally, and being the “First Lady of the World'' (Michael 1) she was prominent about her beliefs.
