Ella Josephine Baker was an African American Civil Rights activist and a Human rights activist born on December 13, 1903, in Norfolk, Virginia. For most of Ella Baker’s childhood, she grew up listening to her grandparents telling stories about being enslaved. While growing up, Ella Baker felt a sense of social justice at a young age, due to her grandmother’s life stories under slavery. She studied at Shaw’s University in Raleigh, North Carolina, during her time there she challenged school policies she thought were unfair. Ella Baker assisted the Southern Christian Leadership as Executive Secretary. On December 13, 1896, Ella Baker peacefully passed away on her 83rd birthday.
