The key to all exceptional leaders is being able to empower others and watch them reach their goals. No leader could be in the position they are in without having followers that are willing to stick by them through thick and thin. Being an empowering person means to have the drive and energy of getting others involved and caring. As representing a transformational leader, DeGeneres is an active member of the LGBT society. LGBT rights is a pressing issue in today’s culture and DeGeneres was one of the first public figures to jump on the bandwagon. Prior to having her talk show, Ellen, she starred in a her own sitcom. This is where in one of the episodes, she revealed she was gay for the first time in public. In the late 1990’s this caused a huge uproar of upset fans and critics because no celebrity had come out as gay before without their career being tarnished. Those qualms didn't stop DeGeneres from airing the episode regardless of if she would lose her contract or not. Even after receiving an Emmy nomination for the episode in which she came out openly in, JC Penney revoked their advertisements from being shown during the show and the television network cancelled the show a few episodes later. In spite of all she went through during her coming out and the risk she took with her career, she knew it was more important for her to be happy with herself than live a lie. “I decided this was not going to be something that I was going to live the rest of my life being ashamed of” (DeGeneres, 1997). To this day, DeGeneres is still an active member of LGBT and promotes the acceptation of diversity on her show. She features other LGBT members and drives a huge force behind making any sexual orientation an acceptable public
