Between the years of 1880 and 1930, over 27 million people immigrated into the United States, in which 12 million of them came through Ellis Island!
By the 1880's, steam powered engine boats had dramatically shortened the long journey to America. Immigrants started pouring in from all over the world! From places like the Middle East, the Mediterranean, both southern and Eastern Europe, and even down from Canada. In the 1880's alone, 9% of the Norwegian's population immigrated to the United States. Once the year of 1892 hit, nearly all immigrants came into the newly opened Ellis Island.
