In this year of 1807, yet another looming choice must be made by Thomas Jefferson. The Situation arose that while France and England are at war, both countries passed laws that restricted each country’s trade in some way. The French made it impossible for the British to trade with any other country allied or dependent upon France. Likewise, the British forbade any French trade with the British allies, neutrals as well as a blockade on French and allied ports. The british also enforced that all ships that did not stop to be checked by the English were liable to British seizure. The Embargo Act would be less costly then a war, protect American property and men, as well as lead to opportunities within the country such as westward expansion and the growth of interstate trade and an agricultural incline. The Embargo act may cause AMericans to lose two trading partners, but it avoids a war where countless lives would be lost and a large debt would be gained from a war that rests upon France and Britain. While it is true Jefferson does favor France, halting all trade with the French would also lead to a downfall of America with an increase of impressment. The Embargo Bill can ensure that no more American vessels storing goods and the men of the country will be taken. War will cause chaos, an event not needed during the prosperous time after the Barbados war. AMerica has the power and resource to sustain itself on its own. The Embargo Bill is truly on the best interest of the people to expand interstate unity, strengthen the economy overall, and provide true safety for those once in
