Several years ago while working for a previous employer, I was chosen to be part of a team to develop a new training and evaluation process for the company. Many employees had expressed their concerns that the training new employees received was inadequate, and the yearly evaluation process was not designed to fairly evaluate employees in all departments. There were eight members on the team as well as two members of high level management. The team was given six months to create and roll out this new system to the company. To begin, the task was divided up, and it was decided by the group to focus on the evaluation process first. This, theoretically, would allow time to solicit non-group members for feedback on the new system before rolling it out company-wide. Over several weeks, the group met and discussed the pros and cons of the current evaluation system to determine what parts could remain the same and what needed to change. They still felt the process did not meet the needs of the employees or managers, and many of them felt that the new process instead made it even more complicated and confusing. When we met again as a group, each member agreed with the feedback that was collected. Most members admitted they did not even understand the process themselves or why certain pieces were included, but had just went along in pluralistic ignorance (Forsyth, 2009). Many of them were going along with what they thought management wanted the process to look like, but even the members of the team who were management did not agree on this process we had created.
