After going over and examining the different document groups, I believe that the “Era of Good Feelings” doesn’t deserve its name because of everything that was going on at the time. The name doesn’t go along with that time period and doesn’t make sense to make it known as that. A couple things including how the government and the country was ruled which caused political problems, the conflicts in general, and many other reasons are why I believe this since they all go against the meaning of it. To start off, there was one point where the government as well as the country in general was being ruled, whether it was good or bad. This was taking place towards the East with Albert Gallatin being a part of it since it was from the Gallatin Papers. Document Group F adds to this by stating, “There were also serious political problems that no “era of good feelings” could hide or solve. These problems were reawakened by the very westward expansion and growth of the Cotton Kingdom in which Americas took such pride” (Document F-2). This adds onto how other things were able to cause political problems with the country or government. One of the many conflicts that occurred during this time was the Missouri Compromise, which spoke about slavery and how it is delivered. Document Group C goes on by saying, “That the further introduction of slavery or involuntary servitude be I, except for the punishment of crimes, whereof the party shall be duly convicted; and that all children of slaves, born within the said state, after the admission thereof into the Union, shall be free but many be held to service until the age of twenty-five years.” (Document C-1).
