As many can imagine, the trenches were unsanitary, the stench and dirt were not the main concerns that soldiers faced. Instead the soldiers who remained in the trenches did not only fear for the oncoming attacks from their enemies but also from diseases such as trench foot, cholera, and any diseases that the rat may have carried. These trenches were created by the unity of British and French forces along with enforcement of the Chinese. During World War I, various weapons were created and introduced. These weapons were poisonous gases, flame throwers, grenades, tanks, torpedoes, underwater and land mines, rifles, pistols, hand guns, gun powder, bayonets and enduring artillery. Along with enhanced weapon selection, the battles grounds took a turn. Although there were numerous amount of trench warfare, the air and the sea opened the door to advancement of airborne and water weapons. Throughout the book, Hemingway writes as if he is Lieutenant Henry living in a small Italian village during World War I. The reason for Hemingway to write in this format is that he has personally served in the war, and felt by writing through his own perspective will be more impactful.
