“ A Lesson Before Dying”
The mentors in this drawing that I made represent Grant Wiggins, who’s a school teacher who is asked to help Jefferson, a young black man who was wrongly convicted of a murder and was sentenced to death, in my drawing I show their close mentor relationship in the book, “A Lesson Before Dying” by Ernest J. Gaines. At first Grant was reluctant to take on the job of becoming a mentor for Jefferson because he felt unsure about his abilities and was unsure if he would even have an impact but he later accepted the responsibility for helping him to try to find dignity and self awareness. Grant becomes more than just a mentor to Jefferson, from the conversations and common experiences that they share, Grant becomes a source of hope and courage. Throughout the book, Grant regularly visits Jefferson in jail and brings him things such as food, books, and someone to talk to. The jail cell represents Jefferson’s physical and emotional captivity. It also becomes a place where transformation takes place. Each visit from Grant brings a piece from the outside world into Jefferson’s confined little world, symbolizing Jefferson’ internal boundaries coming down.Ultimately, in my drawing I tried to capture the relationship’s core and demonstrate the power of transformation that Grant gives to Jefferson. It shows how Jefferson is able to face what is coming to him, thanks to the help of Grant and his courage and support. Through the power of mentoring and human
