Esquimalt, a vibrant community established in 1912, is located in the Capital Regional District (CRD), and is home to roughly 17,000 people. The Canadian Forces Base Esquimalt and the Salish First Nations people contribute to the diversity of this community (REFERENCE).
The purpose of this paper is to assess the municipality of Esquimalt. This will be accomplished through the evaluation of the physical environment, population, socioeconomic environments, and education and child development.

Composition
According to Statistics Canada (2015) the population of Esquimalt in 2011 was 16, 480, with 8,140 of those being male, and 8,340 being female. The average age of the population is 43.5 years old, and 88.3% of residents are over the age fifteen years. Thirty-one percent of citizens are legally married and thirteen percent are divorced. Of these households, fifteen percent consisted of couples with children under the age of twenty-five, forty percent were single occupancy, thirty-five percent were couples living without children, one percent accounted for multiple family homes, and nine percent classified as other. (Statistics Canada, 2011).
There are various types of homes in Esquimalt. According to Statistics Canada (2011), apartment buildings make up the bulk of housing at 45.9%, followed by single-detached homes at 25.2%. This information was found to be true from the windshield survey of the community; there are various apartment buildings in the main center of Esquimalt, and many large, single family homes towards the water were observed. It was concluded that the homes along the water, such as the Saxe Point area, were occupied by wealthier populations. This conclusion was drawn because many of the homes were larger, newer, and in desirable real estate
