In the two stories, The Lottery and Night Drive, the characters are acting in a way that does not make sense to most people, and makes us ask why?The forces that are motivating the characters to act like they do in both these books is pressure from society, intimidation, traditions and beliefs.Firstly we have pressure from society as the motive, which is seen in The Lottery, “Pack of crazy fools,” he said. “Listening to the young folks, nothing’s good enough for them.”This is a quote from Old Man Warner when he finds out that their neighboring village had stopped doing the lottery. This statement is made because he feels that the villagers will be peer pressured when they hear other villages have stopped participating in the lottery.
