What could make someone interested in creating outspoken, futuristic literature? Many different aspects of the 1970s inspired writers and readers to change the way they looked at works of text. Books and Literature can be impacted by celebrations of growth in our country, technological advancements, and political events.
1970s Historical, Political, and Social Events
The 1970s was an era of success and celebration, but also a lot of government unrest. From 1973-1975 our country was dealing with the Watergate scandal. Nixon’s administration had attempted to cover up the incident and when it came out it caused distrust between our government and our people. We then had a president going through impeachment hearings, which eventually lead to him resigning to avoid his charges. Some believed our government was corrupt, making it hard for citizens to have any faith in the foundation that our government was created on. In 1976 the U.S. celebrated its 200th anniversary of the United States. It was a reminder of how far we had grown as a country. It moved away from traditional children's stories of years before. Authors started publishing more controversial works that were much more relatable to their young rebellious audiences(A Brief). Children's books and book selling became very popular around this time. Many booksellers decided to join the children’s book industry because they loved books. Most sellers were not very knowledgeable about the business, but they loved the impact books had on small children(Wilensky). Censorship was a huge part of the 70s and how it shaped the ideas of our youth.
