The Harlem Renaissance: The Great Migration and the American Dream. Cassandra Hernandez, Mr.Noel. April 11, 2024.

Have you ever heard of the Harlem Renaissance? It’s about a cultural movement during the 1900’s located in Harlem, New York City. They used art like music, poems, paintings, etc, to express their culture and identities in the United States. During this time, there have been major events like The Great Migration, the Jim Crow laws, the American Dream, World War I, The end of slavery, and the Great Depression. In this essay, the events discussed here will be about The Great Migration and the American Dream.

The Great Migration was about millions of African Americans moving from the south to the north in the early 1900’s. They wanted to escape segregation and racism, find job opportunities, and a chance for a better life. The migration was divided into two waves, from 1910-1940 and from 1940-1970. During the first wave, more than 1.6 million African Americans from the south moved to different parts of the north. They mostly went to cities on the northeast side like Detroit, NYC, and Chicago. It also depends on the state in the south they live in. It focuses on liberty, democracy, and equality. It became popular during the Great Depression in 1931 from a book written by James Truslow Adams, an American writer and historian. But then later on it became harder to achieve the dream. This dream inspired Harlem artists to express their perspectives through art, poems, music, literature, etc. They fought the stereotypes, expressed their struggles for the racial equality of the dream, and focused attention on their achievements to show that they can also achieve
