A quote from Theodore Roosevelt states, “People ask the difference between a leader and a boss. The leader leads, and the boss drives.” Former President Theodore Roosevelt’s explanation for the difference between a boss and a leader is clear and concise. However, it misses some key elements that separate the two. For years corporate America and other forms of businesses have set forth roles for each employee. A boss can be equivalent to a CEO, owner, store manager, or a supervisor. A leader can be described as the assistant manager, branch manager, team leader/ shift leader or simply a store associate. While the terms boss and leader are used interchangeably, there are three major dissimilarities between them.
First and foremost, the boss can be assumed to be the employer, while a leader would simply be an employee. For argument’s sake let us only focus on simple businesses. In that format, a boss would oversee hiring and firing within the company. In most cases, this puts bosses in a position of inspiring fear in the workers. They are also the operators of the business or company. They are responsible for keeping the numbers straight, the cash flow proper, and the business overall profitable. Ultimately, anyone can be a boss. A leader, on the other hand, generates enthusiasm, and influence others to do their jobs merrily. When contemplating who is a leader you should consider if the person is a good follower, takes and gives advice, and if that person works to show themselves approved.
