Imagine you were a mouse with dreams of having your own place with your best mouse friend. Both of you wished for nothing but the simplest form of rural freedom and happiness. Your best mouse friend lived during the present time not worrying about the past or the future. However, you two never would've thought of the turns your lives could’ve took despite your future plans when someone just comes along and ruins everything that you both had. Likewise, “Of Mice and Men” by John Steinbeck introduces two friends; George and Lennie. They travel the world together with friendship and dreams similar to you and your mouse friend’s. Oddly enough, George and Lennie would never be suspected as best friends. “Funny how you an’ him string along together. It jus’ seems kinda funny a cuckoo like him and a smart little guy like you travelin’ together” (pg 39) is a statement said by revered foreman Slim. George was in fact no where near the average NBA player height, nevertheless had a brain fundamentally twice the size to that of Lennie’s. On the other hand, Lennie showed great strength capabilities when put to work on the farms. It’s comprehensible why Slim would make such a comment. Near the ending of the story, Slim and George anticipatedly become good friends after the foreseeable climax happens. Let me scratch the surface on this sprouting friendship with one quote on page 107; “Come on, George. Me an’ you’ll go in an’ get a drink.” Two more characters that showed a great deal of friendship parallel to George and Lennie were Candy and his dog. Candy and George have a tenacious companion with loyalty and devotion. Lennie and Candy’s dog both depend on their caretakers for support. When asked to kill his own dog, Candy stated “No. I couldn’t do that. I had im’ too long.” (pg 45) Coming to a further realization, Candy solaced euthanization because of the belief that it was better for the both of them. Talk about true
