“The tragedy in a man’s life is what dies inside of him while he lives.” A Tragedy as a literary work is illustrated in which the main character is brought to ruin or suffers extreme sorrow, especially as a consequence of a tragic flaw, moral weakness, or inability to cope with unfavorable circumstances. Tragic heroes have been castoff to magnify the meaning of a play or literary work. There are various key characteristics that are needed for the tragic hero to possess in order to be characterized as such. First, he must have a high standing in the community, have a shortcoming or a tragic flaw and has to be involved in a struggle. Ultimately, that struggle will lead to his downfall. Johns choice of not to attend church anymore contributed to his downfall and did not put him in the best place with the townspeople. Tragedy comes from what the protagonist can, and also cannot control. A major step in bringing John to his realization was his suffering. He suffered mentally and emotionally as the heat of the accusations magnified. This harsh torment and emotional stress which Miller constructs adds to the sense of tragedy. Proctor discovers something new about himself and the world that surrounds him in his final moments before his execution. He says “All I have is my name” (pg.127). This is the final breakthrough in the tragic plot. His courage and strength to stand firm in his beliefs leads him to death at the gallows. He would rather die that stomp his name in the dirt any more than he already has. It is one last tragic declaration that the truth still means something.
