In Author Miller’s The Crucible set in Salem, Massachusetts the year of 1692, John Proctor does not fit the definition of a tragic hero. Although he has admirable character traits, Proctor’s infidelity, temper, and selfishness prevent him from becoming a tragic hero. To get a better understanding of these traits one would have to see the traits taking place.

He would rather find ways to solve things that does not affect him but others. Proctors wants what he wants and no compromise. Even with faced with death or life he will not give what others want but only what he wants ” I want my life.” say proctor, judge says to him “You’ll confess yourself?” Still stubborn replies “I will have my life.”(Miller 530-533). John Proctor is so set in his ways that he will not give in at any point even facing death.
In conclusion infidelity, temper, and selfishness prevent john Proctor from becoming a tragic hero. Proctor choose to be the way he was towards the people in his life and authorities. When facing sin, anger, self-esteem, and self-protection Proctor will always choose what he feels is the better decision for him and only him. Selfless actions is a decision that Proctor never got to
