Everyone has heard of Muscular Dystrophy or MD. However, do many people know what it truly is? Muscular Dystrophy is a group of inherited diseases that where the muscles that control movement, also called voluntary muscles, weaken increasingly. I chose this disease because my best friend's niece has this disease and I see first hand what it does, and it affects me. There are different forms of this disease and some of them can even involve the heart and other important organs. There are nine major forms of Muscular Dystrophy. It can develop from an early age, to middle age, and even older age. As of this point in time, there is no cure for MD. However, there are a number of medications and therapy sessions one can take that can slow the growth of this disease. Even though there isn’t a cure, there are researchers that are looking into certain muscle-building medications that could slow down, or even reverse the progression of the disease. Symptoms can also be relieved conventional ways, by doing exercise, using canes, wheelchairs, scooters, and even having surgery. There is a way you can almost prevent MD. If you have a family history of MD and you are looking to have children, you can go to a genetic counselor, and talk to them about other options and ways to get around the disease. For a bone disease I’ve chosen Fibrous Dysplasia. What is Fibrous Dysplasia? It is a skeletal disorder where bone-forming cells fail to mature and produce too much connective tissue. The places where healthy bone are, are replaced with the fibrous/connective tissue. During the replacement, it can be a painful process, and lead to misshapen bones and fractures. When this happens in the skull, it can lead to changes in how your face looks, cause pain, and in rare occurrences even cause blindness, or hearing
