The most commonly known name is Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy but is also known as Psuedohypertrophic Muscular Dystrophy. In the 19th century DMD was recognized as a specific disorder. In 1978-83 DMD was located on the X-Chromosome and the symptoms were identified around 1861 Duchenne Muscular dystrophy is a disease that affects all of the voluntary muscles in the body as well as the heart and breathing muscles and will eventually cause death. Usually those affected will not live past the age of 30. The shoulder blades will be drawn together and the arms held back when walking and the Achilles tendon will tighten so the affected person may walk on their toes when walking. The back will sway and the stomach will stick out due to weak back and stomach muscles. Weak but muscles will call the hip to straighten. The thigh muscles will be thin and weak and the knees may bend back to reduce weight. The lower leg muscle will be thick however since it is mostly made also the front of the leg is weak and cause foot drop and tiptoe contractions. The affected will be weak and clumsy and fall often. The disease will also cause fatigue and most inflicted will have lost their ability to walk by age 12. Normal symptoms start showing signs by age 6 if not prior. As of now there is no known treatment for this form of muscular dystrophy, however in the future there may be Gene Therapy available. Slight physical activity is advised for inactivity could worsen the condition of the patient and accelerate deterioration. Physical Therapy is also recommended because it could help to maintain muscle strength and function. Wheel chairs or braces could help with mobility however after a certain amount of time a wheel chair will be required. This is caused by a defective gene of dystrophin (a protein in muscles) and can often occur without knowledge of it in the family. This gene can come from a carrier mother who does not show symptoms and any sons have a 50% chance
