Sports Ethics Report Sports in America have been historically known for prioritizing male athletes and concerns above female athletes and concerns. Most articles and reporters tend to focus on the male-dominated sports culture instead of sports culture in general. This effect causes a lot of problems to be labeled as a ‘taboo’ subject. The article I chose to report on illustrates the percentage of collegiate women athletes that struggle with eating disorders – an outstanding 60%. This percentage of disorders in women’s sports would assumingly be considered an extreme problem, and would merit some sort of intervention or proactive program, however; the extreme amount of eating disorders in women’s sports has gone under the radar. The article goes on to say most studies show female non-athletes are just as susceptible to develop eating disorders as female athletes, due to the cultural stands of beauty that all women are subject to. The article states that 60% of women harbor some kind of eating disorder. If more than half of the athletic community is battling any kind of mental handicap, I believe that the leaders in that community should acknowledge and address a solution to those problems. This exceeding pressure to be perfect will resonate with our daughters and granddaughters. There should be no excuse to sacrifice your own personal mental and physical heath, just to look ‘perfect’ in a uniform. While there will always be competition in sports, I believe that the sport should be the center of the competition, not how each athlete looked in their uniform. There is so much scrutiny in the athletic community today that it’s becoming less of a community and more of a tribe of gladiators. It’s important to accentuate athletes that build themselves and their communities up, instead of tearing each other
