In business there are three types of misconduct that I have witnessed; Company resource abuse, poor product quality, and Internet abuse. Although there are many more types of misconduct I feel that these three happen quite a bit and are sort of swept under the rug by companies.
Company resource abuse covers a variety of actions that can be considered unethical. I consider any employee treating company property irresponsibly to be company resource abuse. I used to supervise an employee who became know for abusing company resources. First it started with his temper. Whenever he was angry or in any sort of a bad mood he would throw things or make a big scene. One day we rejected a container of his parts and he was so angry he punched a whole in the bathroom wall! This type of behavior causes more work for others (fixing the hole) and is unacceptable in a business environment. We had another employee who was let go because he was abusing the company’s equipment, and therefore was being unsafe. He was a forklift driver and was disciplined several times for driving unsafe, driving too fast, not looking, and texting while driving. Even after all the coaching sessions we had with this employee the worker ended up crashing the forklift into another drivers machine and caused $10,000 in damage to the equipment. After three occurrences and the accident this persons employment was terminated. The second issue that is seen much in the business world is poor quality. One example of poor quality would be an employee who is not following standard operating procedures to make a final product that is acceptable to the customer. I experienced much of this early in my first year of management. I noticed that our customers kept returning parts from a certain employee so I took interest in why this employee was struggling to make quality products. After a few weeks of monitoring I noticed that the employee was doing other things at their station other than working. Usually on his phone, walking around, or having a coffee break, or just hanging out in the bathroom. He was working as fast as he
