Origen's idea of Eros and love are unique comparatively to Christianity's concepts. Basing his ideas off of traditional Christian mysticism, Origen utilized erotic symbolism in the hopes of surpassing what words could not accurately explain. There was a deeper meaning to found and Origen sought to extrapolate from it a better understanding. However, he separated the notions of sexual pleasure from that of earthly desire. This form of desire, in the eyes of Plato, was so powerful that itself must have been of divine prominence. Origen would take this concept further by giving the attribute to God, for God alone must be this powerful compulsive force driving many to return once more to him. Origen's explanation of this new form of love was so serious that God's own desires caused him to 'suffer' in the process.
Whereas Christianity seeks to imbued the individual with love in order to generate the necessary qualities for salvation, Origen instead professed that love stemming from God desires reception from man. This love from God also enable one transcendence as God's love rectifies any and all complications arriving from desires of the material world.

Contemplation is another connection one can make between monasticism and Buddhism.
