As the novel revolves around Lydia's unfortunate passing, Lydia’s life was not so easy. Out of all the biracial children, Lydia has a stellar resemblance to her white mom, Marylin. This had Marylin choosing favourites for her children, and James seeking someone to fill the void in his life for being an outlier through Lydia. This set her on a much higher pedestal than her siblings, putting immense pressure on her to succeed. Not only did James have a cultural setback, Marylin also faced a setback in her life from dropping out of medical school when she was pregnant with Nath. Marylin was extremely intelligent and wanted to attend medical school to become a doctor. With societal pressure about motherhood and femininity of putting children first and staying home, her dreams of becoming a doctor were not fulfilled, resulting in her looking to Lydia to fill the void of her. The pressure for her to excel started at a young age. This proceeded to her having a constant fear of disappointing her parents and ‘failing them’.
